Walkers on their way

By Tony Scholes
Friday, 20th February 2004
The preparation is over and this morning Ben and Paul finally got their ‘Walk up for Burnley' underway when they left Lancaster at a time that most students didn't know existed.

Backed by a Central Lancs Clarets support car, that soon went missing as the driver and passenger went looking for a fry up, they made their way out of the City and headed via the Trough of Bowland for their overnight stop at Waddington.

It is a matter of so far so good and the news at lunchtime is that they are making good progress boosted with the news that sponsorship is coming close to £1,400.

They are not expected to have a wild student party in Waddington tonight but more it will be soaking the feet as they prepare for the assault of Pendle tomorrow, they will be taking the route via the Nick of Pendle into Sabden and then down via Padiham into Burnley.

At Padiham, at the main road entrance to Gawthorpe to be exact, they will be met by visitors to Clarets Mad who will join them for the three and a half miles remaining into the town centre where they will stop to enjoy lunch at the Bridge Bier Huis in Bank Parade.

That will leave them with just the short final walk to the final destination – TURF MOOR – and that will be set to arrive outside the entrance to the Bob Lord Stand on Harry Potts Way at 2:15 p.m. where they are expected to be met by both Chairman Barry Kilby and Chief Executive Dave Edmundson.

If you wish to join the group walking from Gawthorpe, we are meeting between 10:30 and 10:45 to await their arrival and you will all be made very welcome. If not and if you see the lads then en route then please give them a wave, a toot on your car horn, or even better some money towards the fund.

If you are anywhere near Yorkshire Street or Harry Potts Way when they make their way to the ground then please give them your support – they really do deserve it.

Clarets Mad have been told that both of them will be spending a quiet Saturday evening resting their feet having first watched the Clarets play Ipswich and then been for a meal with their two families who have given them great support.

Enjoy it lads, we won’t be asking you to do it again for a while.

You can still sponsor them and hopefully we can get the money raised over £1,500. To sponsor them please send cheques payable to 'Walk up for Burnley' to the following address:
