FootyMAD >  Clarets MAD >  Clarets History >  History by Decades
Although football was growing in popularity in Lancashire there was little, if any, to be seen in Burnley as we moved into the penultimate decade of the 19th Century.
The final decade of the century was to provide the Burnley supporters of the day with hope and expectation before we had our first disasters since the formation of the League.
The first decade of the 20th Century is not one that will be remembered well by Burnley Football Club. It started with us losing our First Division status, something we never threatened to regain.
The first year of the new decade saw a managerial change at Turf Moor but not in this case a sacking or a resignation but the death of Spen Whittaker in very tragic circumstances.
Hopes were high in the town in the summer of 1920 after Burnley had ended the previous season in second place, there were many even predicting that we could even lift the League Championship.
When looking back at the history of Burnley Football Club the 1930s is not a decade people will rush to as the club, like the town, struggled through a difficult period in history.
League football in the previous decade had come to an abrupt end with the outbreak of war and it was over half way through the 1940s, and a year after the end of the war, before it returned.
